A pair of Roman ceramic lamps. The first is a North African type, c. 4th - 5th Century AD, the flat top with central relief of a bird standing atop a spiral column, berries before, the shoulder with raised pellets and channel on the nozzle, pinched handle at back and ring base on bottom. L: 4 1/5 in (10.7cm). The second lamp, c. 4th Century AD, with rosette within the concave discus, raised pellets around the shoulder and narrow channel on nozzle, pinched handle at back, shallow ring base on bottom. L: 3 3/5 in (9.1cm). Both nice examples with earthen deposits and each show carbon deposits from use in antiquity. Ex New York private collection.
