A pair of Regency rosewood side cabinets,...
A pair of Regency rosewood side cabinets,
with inlaid moulded brass banding, each with rectangular top above a pair of glazed doors enclosing shelves flanked by giltwood carved monopodiae with anthemion and palmette decoration on a plinth base (2)
106cm wide, 89.5cm high, 43cm deep
Provenance: Savoy Croft, Ayr
See Phillips Glasgow, May 28th 1991, Lot 577.
Savoy Croft was built by the architect James A Morris for his own use in 1893. He furnished it with a combination of contemporary and antique furniture, of which this pair of cabinets was the highlight. The house and collection remained intact until sold by his daughter
Sarah's executors.
The cabinets are closely based on a Thomas Hope design, the monopodiae in particular being virtually identical to those on the library table illustrated by Frances Collard in Regency Furniture 1985 p.95. This is derived from p132 of Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration of 1807
