A pair of English made flintlock horseman’s size holster pistols with locks marked A.W. Spies. Well known American agent from New York circa 1820’s-30’s. The pair have silver inlaid plaques into the wrists which areinscribed with the initials L.B. in fancy period script. A large research folder and considerable documentation to their provenance is included. The pair were purchased by J.A. Dunker (early San Francisco California Collector) from the Far West Hobby Shop in 1936. Far West Hobby Shop believed them to be the property of Col. Lawrence Barrett who served in the American Revolution. However Spies did not open hisbusiness in New York until the 1820’s and subsequent research identified them as the property of Lawrence Barrett (1838-1891).
