A north italian NEOCLASSIC style PARCEL-GILT FRUITWOOD DOUBLE CHAIRBACK SETTEE 20th century circa...
A north italian NEOCLASSIC style PARCEL-GILT FRUITWOOD DOUBLE CHAIRBACK SETTEE 20th century circa 1825 The incurved back with two gadrooned tapering backrests centering a smaller similar splat raised on a curved support, all united by a vertical molded crossbar and extending to form the arms with scrolled terminals, on fluted curved supports, the curved padded seat with panelled rails raised on square tapered fluted sabre legs headed with square panels 501/4 X 34 X 26 in. 128 X 87 X 66 cm - $3,000-5,000 A virtually identical settee is known (Maurizio Cera, Il mobile italiano dell'Ottocento: 1815-1915. Vicenza, 1997, p. 13). The gadrooned tapering curved backrests of this Italian settee reflect the most pronouced expression of the Austrian Biedermeier style as practised in Vienna (Christopher Payne, 19th century European Furniture. Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1985, p. 343, fig. 1007 and Angus Wilkie, Biedermeier. New York, 1987, p. 138, no. 35). Such stylistic transgression is understandable given that in 1825 Venice and Vienna were both in the Austro-Hungarian empire.
