A magnificent and rare Southern Railway front NUMBERPLATE “21C2”. As carried by the ‘Merchant Navy’ class 4-6-2 Pacific “UNION CASTLE” built at Eastleigh in June 1941. These substantial gun-metal plates were carried on the front of only the first two locomotives in the class 21C1 “Channel Packet”, and 21C2 “Union Castle”. 21C1’s numberplate is in a famous collection, so this is the only chance to own one of these rare plates. Both locomotives incidentally carried Cabside numberplates as well but they were of a different pattern and size, and reputedly were almost certainly scrapped. The locomotive was renumbered 35002 in January 1950 (by which time the cast plates had been removed anyway), rebuilt at Eastleigh in May 1958 and spent its latter years based at Exmouth Junction, Bournemouth, Nine Elms, Bournemouth again, ending its days at Nine Elms. It was withdrawn in February 1964 after running 1,101,914 miles and was cut up by Birds Commercial Motors, Morriston, Swansea. The plate is rectangular 34¼”x12½”, face-polished and repainted only.
