A group of two wood netsuke.
Attributed to Masakazu, Gifu or Nagoya, Early 19th century. The first, a mask of an Exorcist, the nose large and upturned, the mouth in a downward sneer, a stubble of whiskers etched and then polished off. The eyes are recessed with deep holes for pupils, which may have lost inlays. Inscribed on the crossbar, Masakazu. 1 7/8in (4.6cm). The second, a Buddhist priest holding a long serrated knife and in the process of cutting off the horns on an Oni who kneels in front of him with hands held to his mouth in abject resignation. Well-worn and beautifully patinated. Inscribed on the underside, Masakazu. 1 7/8in (4.7cm). Provenance: The first, Barry Davies, London.
