A fine Victorian era British Honourable
This attractive Honourable Artillery Company sword, from one of the earliest and most famous British fighting units, dates from the second half of the 19th century. The steel blade has an overall length of 36 1/2 inches and is etched decorated with vine leaf motifs and "HAC" on both sides and maker marked on the ricasso "F.H. James. New Bond St London". The gilt bronze guard is decorated with a flaming grenade design and the grip is bronze wrapped dark fish skin. The scabbard of 31 1/2 inches length in brown leather with gilt brass fittings, has a half inch leather band 11 inches from the bottom suggestive of an old repair. The blade in handsome overall condition with only mild signs of wear and age toning from some light rust nicely cleaned long ago. Also included is the original sword belt of burgundy leather and silver bullion thread with silvered buckles, this complete and in good condition.
