A division one engraved pearl pictorial button
1 Extra :large early 19th C. Coachmen's pearl Equestrian button. This very thick pearl from the early half of the 19th century used to be considered from the 18th century. They are called coachmen's buttons because it was coachmen that wore these very large and thick engraved and pigmented buttons. Often they depict coaching scenes and sometimes sporting. This example shows a horse head inside a horseshoe which is a little less common than other pictorials in the coaching buttons. The engraving is very detailed and the black pigment has kept its vibrancy. From the collection of the late Jean Young of California. This is the largest example of a coaching button I have ever seen, incredible at 3" in Diameter.
