A division one Japanese inlaid button
1 Large-Medium 19th century oval Shibayama Button. Here is a beautifully hand crafted 19th century natural material inlayed button in the Shibayama technique. Shibayama is the name given to this style of inlay work after an 18th century Japanese artist who created and perfected the technique. Buttons were not made in this technique as far as we can tell till the late 19th century. Some of the Shibayama buttons one sees today were produced in China in the late 20th and early 21st centuries are not to be confused with these fine hand made versions from the 19th century. Oval examples are also much less common like this example.
