A division one French porcelain pictorial button
1 Medium size oval 19th century "Pate Sur Pate" button. This example has been always considered to be in this technique of Pate Sur Pate but recently the classification committe of the NBS has decided to decalssify this example as Pate Sur Pate, however we will tell you that our ceramic experts would disagree with that determination as the French examples we are talking about like this one certainly appear to be of the same technique. You can see one of the examples that the committee does currently accespt as Pate Sur Pate in this auction of the pinecone and leaves. However, whatever the determination is, this example is is still a wonderful and hard to find example of beautiful porcelain works from the late 19th century FRench porcelain factories. Pate sur Pate is a technique wherby the artists would apply multiple layers of slip (liquid clay) to an unfired, unglazed base.
