<B>A collection of Slave Documents and an Interesting Civil War-dated Document from the "Bureau of Colored Troops"</B></I> <BR><BR> An 8" x 10" partially-printed document, headed <I>"Bureau of Colored Troops, Head Quarters Department of Virginia and North Carolina, Army of the James, Dec. 30, 1864,"</B></I>and announcing the appointment of four new second Lieutenants: F. J. Arnold, John Swartz, John F. Lukens, and Frank J. Butler; signed by W. B. Scott, <I>"Asst. Adjt. General."</B></I> <BR><BR>Also, a collection of ten hand-written documents, mostly 8" x 10". Overall, fine condition, none rough. <BR><BR><B>1) 1852 lawyer's receipt</B></I> for filing a court petition to divide, and sell the slaves from an estate. <BR><BR><B>2) 1846 I. O. U. </B></I> for $4.<I> "for the hire of a boy Proper"</B></I> <BR><BR><B> 3) 3 page 1843 petition</B></I> of a widow for the distribution of land and slaves from her husband's estate. Listed by names are 11 slaves: men, women, and children. <BR><BR><B>4) 1846 report of income</B></I> from the hire of 10 named slaves. <BR><BR><B>5) 1862 Alabama court petition</B></I> seeking authorization for the distribution of <I> "eight Negro slaves,"</B></I> each identified by name, age, and sex, from an estate. <BR><BR><B>6) 1847 report to the court</B></I> of income received from the hire of 11 named slaves. Wages averaged $70. to $110. for the year. <BR><BR><B>7) 1838 inventory and appraisal</B></I> of a large estate, listing various household and farm implement items, as well as, 12 named Negro slaves, ranging in appraised value from $250. to $850. each. <BR><BR><B>8) 1835 inventory and appraisal</B></I> of an estate listing all property, including 10 named slaves and 240 acres of land valued at $6. per acre. <BR><BR><B>9) 1855 receipt</B></I> to a Guardian upon discharge form guardianship duties in return for $2,079. and 3 named Negroes and a child. <BR><BR><B>10) 1857 report</B></I> of an estate administrator showing various income including, <I> "Hire of Negro Jim"</B></I> at $10. per month. <BR><BR>A very nice grouping, all suitable for display.
