A chair for the banquetting hall of the palace of Archduke Wilhelm, designed by Theophil Hansen around 1866, manufactured by Anton Fix, Vienna, solid walnut and walnut veneer, partially with gold painted decoration, partially covered in a brown glaze, the seat and backrest covered in leather embossed with floral motifs, height 105 cm, depth 53 cm, width 50 cm, height of seat 48 cm. This chair is one of the most significant surviving examples of furniture-making in the period of Viennese Historicism. It comes from the banquetting hall of the palace of Archduke Wilhelm in the 1st district of Vienna, Parkring no. 8. Archduke Wilhelm was a Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, and his dining hall was primarily used as a semi-sacral ceremonial hall for the meetings of the Order's members. The dating of the chair to 1866 coincides with the time when the building was completed, and the decorative elements of the chair relate to the style of the building. For instance, the carved arabesques comply with the ornamental wall pilasters in the room, in between of which the chairs had been arranged. A further example is in the collection of the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts (MAK), Vienna, inv. no. 2066a/1964. Lit.: Wien am Anfang des XX. Jahrhunderts.
