A carved white marble bath and step, formerly belonging to Queen Marie-Antoinette of France and from the Palace of Saint Cloud, France, with brass plate giving the provenance and history of both, the bath somewhat damaged, very possibly during the French Revolution. Provenance: Queen Marie-Antoinette of France (1755-1793), Arthur Lawson Johnston Esq., Odell Castle, Odell, Bedfordshire, by whom purchased from the French Government in 1888, and by descent within his family at Odell Castle, Bedfordshire. Marie Antoinette's marble bath and marble footstool are from the Palace of Saint Cloud, Paris Marie Antoinette was reputed to bathe in asses' milk to preserve her skin and from every window at Saint-Cloud Palace marvellous vistas stretched to the horizon, punctuated with pools and fountains in the gardens. With the onset of the French Revolution the furniture and contents of the Palace of Saint Cloud were dispersed and it is thought that the Queen's bath was damaged at this time. Arthur Lawson Johnston belonged to a group of friends who delighted in outdoing each other at auctions by buying unusual items - one friend even bought Bonnie Prince Charlie's bed, used by the Prince at Culloden. Due to the nature of this lot it must be removed from the saleroom within two weeks of the sale date and a specialist carrier may be required £400-600
