A cane believed carried by Emperor Napoleon. An interesting cane with historic provenance, in this case having a connection to the Emperor Napoleon I. Acquired in Vancouver B.C. in 1997 through a highly reputable dealer, this item was found in an old estate in that city. The cane itself is unremarkable, save for an old letter wrapped around it, and a label saying that it was Napoleon's cane, and came "From a Castle in Belgium". Having the stature of the Emperor in mind, a cane this long was obviously not custom-fashioned, and its style is far too modest for a man of the Emperor¹s wealth and stature. However, according to the letter found with the cane (and reproduced below, with translation following), said item was taken up and used by the Emperor during his visit with one Mme van Aellrouck at her Belgian estate during the first quarter of the nineteenth century. The letter establishing the piece¹s provenance, in French, was written by a Colonel in the Garde Civique (G.C.) on duty at the time of the visit, and dated 1830. The letter reads: "CANNE DE NAPOLEON AVEC LAQUELLE IL S¹EST PROMINE AU JARDIN DE MME VAN AELLROUCK AVANT CHASSE SOLE LIE (COLONEL DE LA GARDE CIVIQUE) SOLTGEN 1830". Both letter and cane have been examined in Paris and judged to be of the correct period (first quarter nineteenth century), while the unvarying width of the ink line was problematic. To reject this provenance is to accept the somewhat far fetched notion that someone would pen such a letter for posterity with the intention of fooling others almost two centuries later.
