A Yellow-Glazed Archaistic Vessel and Cover, Of oblong section, the vessel decorated with bands of archaistic motifs, with a pair of loop handles issuing from dragon heads, and raised on a pedestal base with domed lower section, the domed cover decorated en suite and in the center with a foliated dragon amidst clouds surrounded by four upright flanges with scalloped edges, covered overall with a glaze of deep yellow tone. Early 20th Century, Height: 9 3/16 inches (23.5 cm) [Surface soiling, chips. This condition report states major condition issues only.] Note:With the restoration of the kilns in Jingdezhen under imperial patronage which began in 1862, there was a heightened demand to create porcelains in imitation of Yongzheng and Qianlong types as part of a palace endeavor to restore past glory. However, some plain altar vessels in white, yellow, such as the current example, or purple glaze broke sharply with tradition, ushering the taste for strong color unrelated to classical examples which from palace down was to be a leading characteristic of ceramic taste. For an identical example in color and size, also dated to the 19th century, sold at auction, please see lot 385, Christie's New York,15 September 2009.
