A WORKS NUMBERPLATE “London & North Eastern Railway 61998 Darlington Works 1938”. As carried by the LNER K4 Class 2-6-0 LNER 3446 “LORD OF DUNVEGAN” built at Darlington emerging to traffic on 30th December 1938. It was renamed “MACLEOD OF MACLEOD” in March 1939, becoming LNER 1998 from May 1946; BR 61998 from April 1948. A 3-cylinder class designed by Gresley for use on the West Highland lines. 61998 was shedded at Glasgow Eastfield and latterly at Thornton Junction before withdrawal came on 2nd October 1961 for scrapping at Inverurie in March 1962. Oval cast brass, 9”x5”, lightly polished and repainted. A Cowlairs casting.
