A WILLIAM IV MAHOGANY READING CHAIR Probably Irish, circa 1830 The close-nailed horseshoe shaped padded back fitted with an adjustable slope on squared supports to the padded seat, the turned tapered front legs headed by turned roundels and carved with lotus leaf with brass caps and castors 32 X 271/2 X 25 in. 81 X 70 X 63 cm - $10,000-15,000 According to Thomas Sheraton (Cabinet Dictionary 1803), such chairs were 'intended to make the exercise of reading easy, and for the convenience of taking down a note or quotation from any subject'. A design of an adjustable chair by Thomas King dated 1835 with identical front legs is known (Edward Joy, The Pictorial Dictionary of British 19th Century Furniture Design, Antique Collector's Club, 1977, p. 364). Thomas King (fl.1790-1840) published a number of pattern books between 1829 and 1840, giving his address in Gate Street, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.
