In this publication, Smith puts the designs of Thomas Hope into general circulation. Smith paid great attention to Gothic designs, claiming that the Gothic movement produced 'a more abundant variety of ornament and forms that can possibly be obtained in any other style'. He left a considerable legacy with his 'Collection of Designs for Household Furniture' in 1829 and the 'Cabinet maker's Guide' of 1826. However little is known about the man himself other than the fact that he was a practicing craftsman with forty years experience devoted to cabinet making, who claimed without justification, to be upholsterer to the Prince of Wales. In addition to his own works, he re-issued Thatham's Etchings in 1810.
