A WILLIAM AND MARY SILVER NUTMEG GRATER, of tear drop form, the body with two moulded girdles and two hinged covers, each engraved with a stylised tulip and a stylised English rose, within feathered borders, enclosing a silver grater and an open compartment for nutmeg, by Thomas Cedder, circa 1690-5, 4cm long x 2.5cm high. Illustrated *This is one of the earliest forms of nutmeg graters. Nutmeg was an expensive commodity imported from the Indies used to flavour punches and food and was thought to help ward off the plague. A virtually identical example can be seen at the Victoria and Albert Museum, inventory No.M.148-1939, also by the same maker. ESTIMATE: £700 - 1000 700-1,666.66
