(Early Medieval, English, ca. 550–600 AD. Copper alloy, cells inset with garnets, glass, and gold paste. Interesting ingraved detailing on flap. The belt buckle was a field for elaborate decoration and a very visible symbol of rank and status. Brightly colored buckles inset with pieces of glass and stone are characteristic of Visigothic women's dress. **For similar example, see current exhibit at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Gallery 301. 2"L x 1-1/2"TM, very tip of prong missing since antiquity, plus expected wear to stones and metal.
