A Victorian oak armchair constructed in 1847 from original timber of the Maxwell Seaton Sluice of 1784, with a ropetwist carved hoop back, the crest inscribed and initialled D, with a padded back, seat and arms supported by dolphins with a chain carved seat rail on massive scroll carved legs, 113 high x 79cm wide Note: 'Maxwell', (1784-1847), originally measured at 176 tons but later re-measured at 234 tons after she was lengthened in 1802, the 'Maxwell' was built at Stockton in 1784. She spent her entire career trading up and down the east coast of England to London, usually out of Newcastle - her home port for much of her life - but also out of Shields or the Humber. Owned throughout by the Dryden family, initially her master Captain R Dryden, she changed her home port to Seaton Sluice (Northumberland) in the early 1840's, which remained thus until she was broken up in 1847 after over sixty years at sea. £800-900
