Contemporary to mid-nineteenth-century quarter calf over pastepaper boards, calf lettering label. Binding rubbed and worn, with joints starting at the top and bottom, leather spine label chipped with the loss of a couple of letters. Sheets are browned and with a few small stains, but still supple and bright. Last two leaves a bit tattered at the edges. Housed in a custom clamshell case of quarter brown morocco over marbled boards, spine in compartments with five raised A rare record of the abortive colony of Napoleonic loyalists established in Texas in 1818. Along with accounts by Hartmann & Millard and the anonymous "C.D.," this work comprises one of the three chief publications on the colony. The French group, under Gen. C.F.A. Lallemand, landed at Galveston in January 1818 and attempted to establish a colony on the Trinity River. The effort failed that summer, and the remainder of the starving colonists retreated to New Orleans. Despite its short life, the colony was the center of an important episode in the maneuvering for control of Texas between Spain, the United States, and the not yet independent state of Mexico.
