A TURKISH YATAGAN DECORATED WITH INLAY, COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL SHEATH, 18TH C.
A beautiful example of an 18th century Ottoman yatagan complete with its original sheath. The blade is almost entirely free of pitting and rust. There are two grooves running down either side of the back of the blade. There are also two gold inlaid engravings on the blade. One on the obverse, with a mix of floral and geometric designs, and some damage to one corner of the central motif. Then the reverse side, which is a framed Arabic inscription with floral motifs. The ricasso has a decorative metallic overlay with what appears to be either gems or glass proxies on either side. The handle is a traditional yatagan type made primarily of bone, and has decorative elements throughout, including metal flowers and quarrels possibly made of glass. The scabbard is very well preserved and has exquisitely detailed silver on both the locket and the chape. The main body of the scabbard is wood wrapped in leather.

L: 31.25 in. (79.38 cm.); H: 3.25 in. (8.26 cm.); W: 5 in. (12.7 cm.)

The blade appears to be slightly pitted towards the tip. The leather scabbard has expected signs of wear. Two quarrels missing from the handle.
