A TURKISH KILIJ WITH BLACK LEATHER SCABBARD, 19TH C.
An Ottoman Turkish kilij of the 19th century with an attractive horn handle in the characteristic kilij style, a brass guard with upturned quillons, and a gently curved triple-fullered blade. The scabbard is of a wood core wrapped in black leather and adorned with brass fixtures throughout except the chape which is of iron. The throat is decorated with the star and crescent, a typical symbol of the Islamic world and especially the Ottoman Empire at this time. In addition, there is copper wire stitched down the length of the scabbard, and there is a remaining piece of leather for hanging the sword from one's person.

L: 38 in., (96.5 cm.)

Good overall. Blade has some minor pitting but is mostly clean and rust-free. All parts tight except for the band holding the lower attachment ring on the scabbard. Leather worn consistent with age. Some oxidation on throat, surface rust on chape.
