Philadelphia, 1826-1838Comprising a baluster-form coffee pot, a pair of ovoid teapots, a similar covered sugar bowl (each with wide flaring rims and domed lids), a cream jug, a waste bowl, twelve cups with flaring sides and twelve saucers, eleven small plates, and a serving plate, all decorated with gilt rims enclosing black painted reserves of Philadelphia views. Firing cracks; chip to rim of one teapot, chip to lid of covered sugar bowl, crack in one teacup, repair to handle of another.H. of coffee pot: 11-1/2, dia. of small plates: 6-1/4 in. A piece of kaolin from the same source as the set accompanies this lot.PROVENANCE:The above tea and coffee service was given to Israel Hoopes by Mr. William Ellis Tucker. Mr. Hoopes then gave the service as a wedding present to his daughter Margaret, who married Bartholomew Smedley. Her daughter Annie Smedley married Marshall S. Way, and the set passed to their son Channing Way, Sr., and subsequently to Channing Way, Jr., who, with no issue, gave it to his nephew and two nieces, for whom it is being sold.It should be noted that Israel Hoopes of New Garden, Chester County, Pennsylvania, owned a farm on which William Ellis Tucker purchased the right to excavate kaolin, which he in turn used in the manufacture of his porcelain.
