A TOTEM “KENSINGTON (OLYMPIA)”. This name, in what I can only assume is an experimental black on cream, is painted over a “WILLESDEN JUNCTION” totem. A fair amount of the paint has flaked off but the letters are largely unaffected. The ‘Willesden Junction’ totem which is fully flanged, seems to be in very good condition. What a dilemma! - do you strip or don’t you! Kensington Olympia is an ex West London Railway station opened as “Kensington” in 1862; renamed “Kensington Addison Road” in 1868; “Kensington Olympia” in 1946. A “Kensington (Olympia)” totem (with brackets) has never been seen in Auction so maybe they were all painted over ‘Willesden Junction’ totems. On the other hand “Kensington Olympia” (no brackets) are known. What a mystery!
