A Survivor of Bloody Antietam. Soldier'
A Survivor of Bloody Antietam. Soldier's letter, Oct. 12, 1862, from James Bartlett, a survivor of Antietam, to his wife. Writing from Pleasant Valley, Maryland, 4 pp. "...Moved out camp...march took us 9 hours...up the side of a mountain & down the other...Called Blk. Ridge and the highest land I ever saw...Pleasant Valley lay at our feet dotted with the white tents of the Army that had preceded us... This is a beautiful spot, so different from Antietam...." They moved because the old camp was so "unhealthy...bad water," and the stench of "half berried [sic] men & horses from the battlefield of Antietam...The citizens are simple but kind hearted, who bring goods to camp to sell...a large apple pie for 12 , 3 apples for a cent." Writes about harvesting and crops at home, drawing "State Ade," and more. Corner cut off in opening, affecting about a dozen words. About fine, with excellent content. With small map of th Antietam, Brownsville, and Sharpsburg area.
