A Sunderland lustre bowl The Great Eastern Steam-Ship , printed in puce and coloured with enamel...
A Sunderland lustre bowl "The Great Eastern Steam-Ship", printed in puce and coloured with enamels with a central print of the combined sail and paddle steamer, and with three further prints around the outside (a different print of the same ship, a three-masted sailing ship, and "The Pensioner's Yarn"), decorated overall with pink lustre, diameter 25.9cm, unmarked, circa 1858-60 (broken and glued)
The "Great Eastern" was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Eastern Steam Navigation Company. Launched in 1858 it had taken five years to build and was then the largest steamship in the world. Never successful as a passenger ship, she went on to lay the first successful trans-Atlantic cable but was dismantled in 1889.
