The consignor has evidence that this is a portrait bust of Charles Lee Patton, first president of Patton McGuyer Co., 1928-1930.

Ex. Coll.: C. L. Patton, Patton MacGuyer Co.

Elie Nadelman briefly attended Warsaw Art Academy and in 1903-1904, he took a studio in Paris and made frequent visits to the Louvre. He was particularly interested in the sculpture of Michelangelo and the works by Auguste Rodin and George Seurat. In 1905-07, Nadelman exhibited in Salon d'Automne, and in 1908-09, Leon Stein took Picasso to Nadelman's studio, where Nadleman's Head of a Man, 1907, was on view. It is conjectured that Picasso's Head of 1908 was influenced by that visit. In 1910-11, Nadleman had an extremely successful show at Paterson's Gallery, London, where Helena Rubinstein bought his entire exhibition. In 1914, after he was unable to join the Russian Army as a reservist, with the aid of Helena Rubinstein he obtained passage to the U.S. and took up residence in New York City. Nadelman's first exhibit in New York took place in 1915-18 at Alfred Stieglitz's Photo-Secession Gallery. In 1919-20, he had a solo exhibition at M. Knoedler & Co. in New York; during that period he also married Mrs. Joseph A. Flannery, a well-to-do New York widow. The Nadlemans began collecting folk art and purchased an estate named Alderbrook in Riverdale, New York. A museum is built on the Riverdale estate to house the Nadelmans' folk art collection. His work for the next two decades received enormous public acclaim. His last one-man exhibition took place in 1930 at Galerie Bernheim-June, Paris. He sold his folk art collection, along with its building, in 1935-37, and he died on December 28, 1946.

Shipping: Requires 3rd Party Shipping (view shipping information)
