A Signed Contract for "The Searchers." Warner Bros., 1956. Eleven pages, typed on onionskin, dated "June 9, 1955," outlining the agreement Wayne had with C.V. Whitney Pictures, Inc. to star in the John Ford-directed film, a standard contract for an actor of Wayne's stature with numerous paragraphs covering every detail of his agreement, with paragraph 14 crossed out by Wayne and initialed by him "JW," paragraph 7a outlines his compensation which was "10% of the gross receipts realized throughout the world in perpetuity," paragraph 8 mentions a "$250,000" advance, signed on the last page in blue ballpoint ink by Wayne and in blue fountain pen ink by Merian C. Cooper [executive producer of the film]; all pages have a two-hole punch mark on top margins; also included is a note handwritten in blue fountain pen ink by Cooper reading in part "Dear Duke: / Here is the / contract.../This is exactly the / verbal deal we made. / I know your word is / good as is mine...Coop."11" x 8 1/2"Many film critics consider "The Searchers" to be the best Western ever made and it has consistently been rated the #1 Western by The American Film Institute for decades.
