From the Shipibo Tribe of eastern Peru, at the headwaters of the Amazon, ca 1950. Pottery bowl painted in traditional colors of creme, bricks, black and deep orange with large tattooed human face on one side - face with expressive natural details. Imagine traveling down the exotic, yet dangerous Amazon river only to happen upon an unknown village with people making pottery like this. Is it geometric? What do the lines mean? Who are the faces on the bowl? Why did they take the time to form the ears? You can't understand the villager's words as they present you with one of these bowls, but you certainly understand the beauty. 4-1/4"H x 7"W. Some wear to the glaze, else intact/choice.

Provenance: Ex-Bishop Gallery, Allenspark, CO.
