Huntington, George. ROBBER AND HERO: THE STORY OF THE RAID ON THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF NORTHFIELD, MINNESOTA, BY THE JAMES-YOUNGER BAND OF ROBBERS, IN 1876. Northfield, 1895. First edition. 12mo, original printed card covers. Frontispiece; 119, (1) pages; 11 additional plates. Fine. A scarce and highly interesting publication on the attempted robbery of the First National Bank of Northfield by the James-Younger gang, a raid which was thwarted by the refusal of acting cashier Joseph Lee Heywood to open the bank’s safe--a refusal that cost him his life. The gang were attacked by townspeople, who caught all but Jesse and Frank James. The debacle marked the downfall of the James brothers’ criminal lives. Howes H823. Sullivan 693.
