India, Rajasthan or Uttar Pradesh, ca. 10th Century AD. Avalokite?vara (Sanskrit: ???????????? lit. "Lord who looks down") is a bodhisattva who embodies the compassion of all Buddhas. Portrayed in different cultures as either male or female, Avalokite?vara is one of the more widely revered bodhisattvas in mainstream Mahayana Buddhism, as well as unofficially in Theravada Buddhism. Standing with attendant figures at each side. Mounted on museum quality stand (very heavy piece). 23-1/2"H x 13"W (26-1/2"H including stand). Repaired break on upper right, with minor chipping/surface wear.
