A SWEDISH LATE BAROQUE GILT LEAD-MOUNTED RED VERRE EGLOMISE AND BLUE GLASS MIRROR Attributed to Gustav Precht, circa 1700 The rectangular plate within a surround with outset corners, surmounted by a scrolled arched cresting, surmounted by three gilt lead flower-filled urns 64 X 351/2 in. 163 X 90 cm - $90,000-120,000 Provenance Private collection, Denmark This mirror originally hung in a danish 'treasure chamber'. dating to the 16th century, such chambers were conceived by aristocrats wishing to impart their perception of the world to the masses. chambers were extremely popular and attracted the attention of those eager to witness the grace and beauty of the pieces housed within. Amongst the visitors to the chamber where this mirror hung, were Emperor Rudolf of Prague, Duke Albrecht V of Bayern and Duke August of Sachen of Denmark. In addition to the use of arched and scrolled crestings and blue or, more selectively, red, verre eglomise panels, Precht utilised distinctive gilt-lead mounts. The two types of flowering urn mounts to the cresting on the present mirror can also be found on two other mirrors (Serge Roche, Mirrors. Trans. Colin Duckworth and Angus Munro. New York, 1985, pl. VII and Graham Child, World Mirrors, 1650-1900. London, 1990, p. 297, fig. 678). The clasps to the corners of the frieze also appear elsewhere (Roche, op. cit., pl. VII; Christie's Monaco, 5 December 1992, lot 95), sometimes as finials flanking the cresting (Sotheby's New York, 28 October 1995, lot 11). The gadrooned and bead-and-chain strip moldings used to edge the present mirror can be found throughout Precht's work.
