A SUPERB KHMER SANDSTONE RELIEF
A SUPERB KHMER SANDSTONE RELIEF
c.11-12th Century Angkor Wat Period, of exceptional museum quality and fine detail, depicting the myth relating to The Churnings of the Oceans of Milk, from part of a larger lintel, even consistent weathering throughout, some minor retouching, Cambodia, 42x52cm
Provenance: From an Australian collection, previously from an English collection, London
Note: The Churning of the Oceans of Milk is an infamous scene in Khmer mythology describing the disruption of the sea by both demons and gods to extract the elixir of immortality. This relief depicts deities engaged in a tug-o-war holding the tail of the serpent. The serpent's centre is coiled around Mt Meru at the base of which is situated Vishnu incarnated as an enormous turtle whose carapace serves as a pivotal point.
