A SPLENDID LAOS TEMPLE BUDDHA, c.19th Century, of teak sculpted in tall slender lithe form, standing above a short pedestal, the fine featured visage with down cast half closed eyes, his body draped in a diaphanous sanghati with centre pleat secured with a belt, hands crossed to the front, his hair in tight curls rising to a domed ushnisha and flaming cintamani, gilded and lacquered, 163x35cm, 184cm including stand
Provenancepreviously from an English collection London, originally acquired from the vicinity of Luang Prabang Note: Laos sculpture is rare. The Laotian kingdom of Lan Xang or Lan Chang was established during the 14th century and ruled by Thais. Its northern capital of Luang Prabang was subjected to cultural influences from the northern Thai city of Chiang Mai, while its southern capital, Vientiane, absorbed Khmer and Ayutthaya (Thai) motifs.
