<b>A SOUTHWESTERN HAND-CARVED AND PAINTED CHICKEN-CHASING KACHINA FIGURE OF A "CONTRARY"</b>
Illegibly signed on underside in pen. A Contrary was a Native American who, for a variety of reasons, adopted behavior that was deliberately the opposite of other tribal members. Contraries were often found in tribes of the Great Plains and the Southwest. This disparate behavior amounted to a cult in its own right; typically, the contrary would order his speech so that he would say the opposite of what he meant. He might also indulge in a physical display, riding his horse facing the tail, walking backwards, and so on, to emphasize his unusual behavior. He also wore clown-like makeup to further differentiate himself from the rest of his tribe. 15 1/2"l x 5"h
