<B>A SOUTHERN PLAINS GOURD PEYOTE RATTLE<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1920<BR> <BR>with a narrow cylindrical handle, covered in hide and decorated with beadwork in various shades of glass seed beads, surmounted by a gourd filled with rattlers, twisted hide suspended below<BR><BR>The gourd rattle was part of the ritual paraphernalia used by members of the Native American Church, sometimes referred to as the Peyote Cult.<BR><BR>Provenance:<BR>Collected from the John Harstead Estate, Rosebud MT, in the early 1900s.<BR><I><BR>Length: 23 inches overall<BR></B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> Overall very good. Gourd scratched and dinged. Minor beadwork loss. Hide braid fringe with moderate soiling and some stiffness.
