A SOUTH GERMAN ROCOCO GREY-PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT CONSOLE Bavaria, circa 1735 The serpentine jasper top above a conforming carved overall with scales, the front centered by a large rocaille framed by opposed rocaille-sheathed c-scrolls, the sides similarly-decorated, on four rocaille and acanthus-decorated cabriole legs with stylized ball and claw feet 301/2 X 43 X 21 in. 77 X 108 X 53 cm - $18,000-25,000 Provenance Christie's New York, 24 September 1998, lot 117 The unusual fish-scale carving and central open cartouche with a rocaille border are distinctive features of Bavarian console tables. The scales must surely be those of the dragon, frequently used for decorative effect on Bavarian rococo giltwood furniture. Consoles so carved are in the collections of the Residenzmuseum in Munich (Brigitte Langer, Die Mobel der Schlosser Nymphenburg und Schleissheim. Munich/New York, 2000, no. 56, pp. 172-73 and Brigitte Langer et al., Die Mobel der Residenz Munchen. Vol. II: Die deutschen Mobel des 16. bis 18. Jahrhunderts. Munich, 1996, no. 60, p. 212).
