A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE “90439”. As carried by the ex Ministry of Supply ‘Austerity’ 2-8-0 77496 built by Vulcan Foundry as Works No. 5012 emerging to traffic in March 1944. It went on loan to the SR from new; then in September 1944 on loan to the GWR. It returned to the War Department in December 1944 for service in Belgium. After returning to the UK it went on loan to the LNER about April 1946, becoming LNER 3118 Class 07 from March 1947; BR 63118 from August 1948. It was purchased by BR in December 1948 becoming 90439 in January 1951; was latterly a New England and Frodingham engine, and was withdrawn from there in November 1965 to be cut up by Station Steel of Wath in March 1966. The plate is basically unrestored, with a repair to one end.
