A SMOKEBOX NUMBERPLATE “44345”. As carried by the ex LMS class 4(later 4F) 0-6-0, LMS 4345, built by Kerr Stuart as Works No. 4373 in 1927 under Lot 31. A development of an earlier Midland Railway design, and introduced in 1924, these ‘Duck Sixes’ were usually found hauling long rakes of mineral wagons on all British Railways regions. 4345 became BR 44345, was latterly a Tebay, Carnforth, Barrow and Heaton Mersey engine, and was withdrawn in December 1963 to be cut up by Looms of Spondon in November 1964. The plate is face-repainted only.
