(A SLAVE DIES OF VENEREAL DISEASE)
"A great lot of two Washington County, Virginia documents executed by William McElive and Fleming Byars concerning the disease and death of the slave woman ""Rachel"". Apparently Byars was trying to sell Rachel for McElive but the slave woman was in poor health. Subsequently, she lost her eyesight and died in 1809 from the effects of venereal disease while still in the care of Byars. There is first a D.S 1p. 4to., [Washington County, Va.] July 15, 1809 showing the expense account of Fleming Byars to a Mr. William McElive charging for the boarding, maintaining, and treating the slave medically. Second, a D.S. 2pp. 4to., Washington County, Va., January 1 & 2, 1811, of four separate affidavits from witnesses who either knew the family or had come to purchase the woman stating that she suffered from some infirmity which was determined to be venereal disease. Fold separations and margin wear affect affidavit with lower portion of first page detached, else good to very good." 2477 A great lot of two Washington County, Virginia documents executed by William McElive and Fleming Byars concerning the disease and death of the slave woman ""Rachel"".
