A SLAVE AUCTIONEER HOPES TO MEET HIS EX-SLAVE
Written on his auctioneer's letterhead

Very rare slave auctioneer's letter on his auction house letterhead with imprinted transmittal envelope in which the slave dealer seeks to have his family meet with a black slave who once cared for his children! The letter is written by auctioneer Hutson Lee on his ornate "Broker, Auctioneer & Commission Agent" letterhead, 1p. 8vo, Charleston, July 18, 1859 to Bolling Hall, the slave's new owner in Montgomery, Al. In part: ...[I] request that you will, if perfectly convenient, allow Rhina, who was my child's nurse, to meet me there as my wife and little ones are very anxious to see her again...please write me before I start from this place...". The transmittal cover bears the same ornate logo as the letterhead. With a reproduction of a period ad showing that Lee routinely sold slaves: "Orders for Negroes promptly and faithfully executed...". Near fine.

Estimate: $700 - 900.
