<B>A SIOUX PICTORIAL QUILLED WOOD PIPE STEM WITH CATLINITE PIPE BOWL<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1890<BR> <BR>composed of an ash wood stem wrapped with dyed porcupine quills, decorated on one side with a turtle and a human figure, the other side with three hourglass elements; the T-shaped pipe bowl, with flattened base, decorated with ribbed panels<BR><I><BR>Lengths: stem, 27 inches; bowl, 8 ¾ inches<BR></B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> In overall good condition. Stem: Porcupine quilling bright with slight loss on mouth end. An approx. 3/4" horizontal slit and 5/8” slit on hourglass side, along with 1/8” x 7/8” loss to pipe end. Turtle side has dark brown splotching on wood and faint inscriptions in unknown material approx. 1-1/4 x 3/4" and 5/8” x 1-1/8.” Catlinite pipe bowl: small ding in ovoid prow end; approx. 1/8” x 1/16” scar on left side shank end. Black discoloration around rim of pipe bowl.
