<B>A SIOUX BEADED AND QUILLED HIDE HORSE HEADSTALL<BR></B></I><BR>c. 1900<BR> <BR>decorated across the forehead with a band of small geometric motifs in various shades of glass seed beads, a panel of rawhide slats wrapped with dyed porcupine quillwork suspended below, trimmed with metal cones inserted with red-dyed chicken feathers, iron bit<BR><I><BR>Length: 31 inches overall<BR></B></I> <B>Condition Report:</B> In overall good condition. Leather with moderate wear, including scuffmarks. Forehead hide strip with beadwork in very good condition and beadwork extant. Brass ornaments shiny but some hardware is tarnished. Porcupine quilled rawhide slats have losses, fading, and inter-painting restoration. Bottom of slats unattached in places with losses of white seed beads. Loss of approx. 21 red chicken feather/metal cone ornament dangles around forehead with some fading and loss of chicken feathers otherwise. Side circular ornaments have beadwork extant, but loose in areas. Porcupine quilling extant but faded. Rawhide tassel dangles missing large areas of porcupine quilling and one side has chicken feather and metal cone ornaments unattached (found in accompanying bag.) Other chicken feathers faded and thin in areas.
