McClure, Phillips & Co., New York, 1903, with the author`s initials printed in the middle of the ornate endpapers. Inscribed on the flyleaf, "And live men are jus` - names", said M. Beaucaire/Booth Tarkington/Capri Nov. 4th `04". Newton Booth Tarkington (1869-1946) was an American novelist and dramatist best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novels "The Magnificent Ambersons" and "Alice Adams". "Monsieur Beaucaire" was later adapted as a play, an operetta and two films made in 1924 and 1946. Dustjacket lacking; cover with edges soiled from handling.
