A SECTION OF FABRIC FROM THE WRIGHT FLYER
A section of fabric from the Wright Flyer which made the first heavier-than-air flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C. on Dec. 17, 1903. The fabric measures 1 3/4" x 1 3/4" and is tipped to a sheet bearing an image of the famous plane in flight along with a calligraphied presentation to James L. Custer and printed provenance. It reads, in part: "When Orville Wright prepared the 1903 Wright flyer for public exhibition in 1928, he replaced the original fabric because it had been damaged by submersion in flood waters in 1913...After Orville's death in 1948, his executors found some of the original wing covering carefully preserved and labeled in his laboratory...this piece of fabric is from the section that covered the lower left wing...". The bottom of the presentation bears a handwritten presentation by an unidentified Wright family member. Fine. Obtained by a major New York Western Americana dealer from a Custer family member in Ohio - the same Custer family as George Armstrong Custer.

Estimate: $1,000 - 1,500.
