Andrew Smith Hallidie is credited for introducing California to wire rope, thus changing mining and engineering forever. Hallidie was born in England and moved with his father to California in the 1850s. Hallidie worked as a miner, blacksmith, bridge builder and surveyor. It was during the time he spent in mines that he witnessed the rapid wear on rope, many wore out after only 75 days. Hallidie constructed a replacement using wire rope, which lasted 2 years. In 1857 Hallidie gave up mining and moved to San Francisco in the 1850s to focus on the manufacturing wire rope. He was brilliant engineer and business man, he contributed to the improvement and efficiency of transportation and mining. Wire and Wire Rope Works. Third edition, published in 1879 by Alta California Printing House. 529 California Street, S.F. Measures 9” x 6” and, except for some minor stains and tears, there is very little wear [Ref: http://www.sfmuseum.org/bio/hallidie.html]. -61585
