<B>A Roman Marble Sarcophagus<BR></B></I>Unknown maker, Roman<BR>Circa 3rd Century A.D.<BR>Marble<BR>88 3/4 inches long (225.4 cm.) Of strigillated type, the central panel sculpted in high relief with a male figure standing with his left leg crossed over his right, the figure depicted nude but for a mantle wrapped around his legs and over his left shoulder, Pan standing to his left, a draped figure to his right with a mantle billowing behind, all on a high plinth, framed by a segmental pediment supported by spiral-fluted columns with Corinthian capitals; one corner with a muscular nude male figure striding to his left on a high plinth, an infant riding on his left shoulder, an animal below, perhaps a panther; the other corner with a female figure standing on a high plinth, her left leg crossed over her right, clad in a belted tunic with a long overfold, her mantle billowing behind, a stela to her left surmounted by a mask; each side panel sculpted in low relief, depicting a winged sphinx seated in profile, each with one foreleg extended forward; the interior and reverse roughly hewn, the remains of iron pins preserved throughout.<BR><BR>Provenance:<BR>Acquired in Massachusetts in the 1950s.<BR><BR><BR><b>Shipping:</b> Requires 3rd Party Shipping (<a target="_blank" href="http://www.heritageauctions.com/common/shipping.php">view shipping information</a>)
