Currency:USD Category:Antiquities Start Price:400.00 USD Estimated At:600.00 - 800.00 USD
A Roman Glass Sprinkler Flask / Pitcher
Rome, ca. 2nd to 4th AD/CE. Very rare example of a single handled pitcher also being a sprinkler flask; with inner diaphragm at the junction of neck and body. Mouth-blown with 20 ribs radiating upward from the pontil mark on base to make a gracefully ribbed pitcher; handle applied separately at the end of the process. Rear of vessel shows the original rich green glass color; front has milky oxidation/ iridescence that fortuitously occasionally occurs with this type of glass. Scholars sometimes call this rare type a “squash glass” which is apparent when viewing the piece from beneath. 5-1/2"H (14cm).

Provenance: Originally in an old English collection, this piece presently resides in the same collection that was loaned for custom exhibitions at museums in Oregon and Florida.

Condition report
